La Porte Police Chief Doug Ditrich unexpectedly died Sunday, city officials said.

The city's Office of Emergency Management confirmed his death. As of Sunday evening, Ditrich's age was unknown.

Ditrich started working for La Porte PD in December 1997 and took over as the chief in May 2023.

It's unclear what caused Ditrich's death. More information is expected to be released on Monday.
