Beaumont Police Chief Jimmy Singletary plans to step away from the city at the end of July.
Singletary told The Enterprise on Wednesday afternoon that his last day will be July 31. He stayed on with the department to see through the hiring process, after originally planning to retire in March.
Beaumont City Manager Kenneth Williams has been searching for a new police chief since early February — a month after Singletary announced his plan to retire.
Williams on Wednesday afternoon told The Enterprise that he plans to make a hire by mid-July.
The search firm contracted by the city is expecting to have the names of the candidates finalized by June 28, the community committee established to help with the search will undergo an orientation from city administration on July 1 and conduct an interview with the candidates on July 10. Also on July 10, members of the public will be invited to a meet and greet with the candidates, and on July 11, interviews
will take place with city administration.
Williams said the city used a recruiter through the process and has received 58 applications from both local and non-local candidates. He would not say how many local candidates have applied.
“We are looking
for someone who will understand the city of Beaumont and help make our city the safest city in the country,” Williams said.
