The impending vacancy of the Corsicana City Manager position has dominated the talk around town; the issue was addressed further at the regular council meeting held Monday.
The item was originally considered then tabled at the June 24 meeting.
The selection of a city manager was not on Monday’s agenda, leaving some to question why the item was not addressed officially. Rules of Parliamentary procedure dictate that three or more members of the council must request that an item be placed on an agenda.
Although the matter was not on the council agenda, residents spoke about the issue during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Pct. 4 City Councilman Jeff Smith said that he supports the city employing an interim city manager for up to a year until a replacement can be found.
Smith expressed gratitude for the two decades of service current City Manager has provided to the city.
Former Corsicana Mayor Don Denbow said that Connie Strandridge has done an outstanding job as city manager.
Former Corsicana Mayor Clifford “Buster” Brown urged the council to confirm John Boswell to the post of city manager and move forward. Brown also said, “those who didn’t believe Standridge did a great job must be smoking an illegal brand of cigarette.”
Brown said there seems to be more ‘CAVE people’ concerning this issue. Brown clarified the acronym stands for Citizens Against Virtually Everything.
Corsicana resident Joe Brooks urged the council and residents to listen to each other.
Terry Garner asked that John Boswell’s name be removed from consideration. He also asked that
Mayor Mike Fletcher step down.
Former Mayoral Candidate Kimberlee Walter asked for the council to be accountable and for transparency.
During Monday’s meeting the council approved fee increases for uncompacted refuse including shingles.
The council approved a motion to waive the fees associated with a producer
requesting the opportunity to film a scene of a movie in Corsicana and to allow the filmmaker to use the name of Corsicana. The film titled “57” is expected to film in Corsicana in July.
The mayor’s appointment of Kamar Chambers to the Main Street Advisory Board was approved.
The mayor announced there are several events for both children and adults at the Corsicana Public
Library during the month of July.
The Battle of the Badges blood drive will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 in the Conference Room inside the City Government Center, 200 N. 12th St. in Corsicana.
Navarro County clean up day will be Aug. 3. The rain date will be Aug. 10.
The council has waived fees for Corsicana residents and reduced fees for
Navarro County residents for the Aug. 3 clean up event.
The city council meets regularly the second and fourth Monday of each month in the Council Chambers of the Government Center at 200 N. Twelfth St. in Corsicana.
