DENTON, Texas — The City of Denton has passed two ordinances to ensure residents have access to essential air conditioning during the hot summer months.
The first ordinance mandates that all landlords within city limits provide air conditioning systems in residential
rental units. This measure aims to keep indoor environments safe and comfortable during extreme heat, according to a statement from the city.
The second ordinance prohibits community associations from restricting the use of window air conditioning units, ensuring residents can use these devices during extreme heat conditions. This decision was made in response to community feedback and aims to protect residents' health and safety, regardless of any previously existing association
rules.
"The well-being of our community is a top priority for the City of Denton," said City Manager Sara Hensley. "With the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat, it is crucial that we take proactive steps to protect our residents, especially those who may be most vulnerable."
The ordinances went into effect immediately. The City’s Community Improvement Services Division is prepared to assist landlords and residents with the transition to achieve compliance.
Individuals encountering non-compliance or restrictions from their community associations are urged to contact Community Improvement Services at 940-349-8743 or
