JACKSBORO, Texas (KAUZ) - The Jacksboro City Council met today to hear allegations concerning city manager Mike Smith.
The Jacksboro Police Association has accused Smith of public intoxication at a city fire department Christmas party on Dec. 7 and subsequently placing multiple police
officers and the chief of police involved in the incident on administrative leave.
Jeff Jackson, the Jacksboro Assistant Fire Chief, said the allegations against Smith were false.
“I will tell you that there is a group that says Mike Smith was drinking, noticeably intoxicated. I’ll tell you, being a first responder for many, many years, longer than y’all been on this Council,
that was an absolute lie,” Jackson told the council.
Aaron Austin, president of the Jacksboro Police Association, told the council that Smith did appear intoxicated.
“On 12/7/2024 Mr. Smith was observed in what appeared to be an intoxicated state at the Jacksboro Fire
Department Christmas party by officers Ragle and McGuire,” Austin said.
John Wilkerson of the Texas Municipal Police Association said a neutral investigation is needed to resolve the situation.
“Get a neutral third party investigator to come in and investigate what happened, you know that night of the Christmas party and then the allegations against the city manager that
occurred prior to that, every person is entitled to due process and that’s what we’re here advocating for. Due process on everybody involved with through a third party neutral investigator,” Wilkerson said.
The city council elected to table the issue until the results come back from an investigation by the Texas Rangers.
